July 10 Board Meeting Update

A non-binding application has been submitted to Sarasota County to further investigate the option of selling the property to the county. Representatives from the county have visited the SGCC and taken notes and pictures of the property for their records. PARC will be reviewing the SGCC Nomination at a meeting on July 12. Information is below.

The Park Advisory and Recreation Council (PARC) meeting is Thursday, July 12 at 2:30 PM in the Think Tank Room on the 3rd Floor at the County Administration Building located at 1660 Ringling Blvd. The public is welcome to speak during the “Open to the Public” section of the agenda and each speaker is given 3 minutes.

May 22 Members Meeting

On May 22, 2018 SGCA members were invited to participate in a discussion revealing the findings of the Building Committee and  discuss the next steps forward. A survey was passed out to all in attendance to help better guide the board of directors in the months ahead.

Survey Results

The majority of members would prefer to see the board work to retain the building by means of a special taxing district or pursue the sale of the property to Sarasota County.

Historical Context

At the 2018 Annual Members meeting in January the board of directors established a special volunteer Building Committee to investigate selling, leasing, or retaining the SGCA Community Center and surrounding property. The committee has been hard at work reviewing options, meeting with professionals, and discussing the impact of each option.
