South Gate is a “deed-restricted community” founded in 1956. This website is designed as an informational resource which contains useful information about our community and community center.

WHAT IS SGCA? We are governed by the South Gate Community Association (“SGCA”) which protects the 2,000+ homes, bordered by Beneva Road, Tamiami Trail, Hyde Park, and Bee Ridge which make up South Gate. The SGCA also controls a community center located on Phillippi creek which boasts acres of charming wooded grounds which are teaming with wildlife and beautifully accented natural floral for the use of its membership. Members also enjoy our community swimming pool and have discounted access to our community center.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! SGCA is self-supported by “voluntary memberships” and community center rentals. SGCA’s goal is to maintain property values, uphold aesthetic standards, and foster a sense of shared identity among neighbors, while maintaining the community center property for the membership.

BECOME A MEMBER! By paying an annual membership fee of $200 you will support:

  • Deed Restriction Enforcement: Preserving the integrity and property value of all the homes located in South Gate.

  • Preservation of the Historic Community Center and Swimming Pool: Safeguarding and maintaining the architecturally Historic Victor Lundy-designed property.

  • South Gate Events: Membership allows free access to the swimming pool and free or discounted entry to events such as the Easter Celebration, Fourth of July Festivities, Food Truck Fridays, and the Holiday Trolley.

The SGCA Civics Affairs Committee has engaged with Sarasota County Commissioners and staff on the removal of the remnant dam structure and dredging Phillippi Creek throughout South Gate. This issue is important to many residents of South Gate due to the recent flooding during the 2024 storm season. The SGCA is committed to ensuring that these projects move forward and that South Gate is included within the project scope.

Why join?

South Gate is a community of 2000+ homes with borders of Beneva Road and Tamaimi Trail (East and West), and Hyde Park and Bee Ridge (North and South).

The South Gate Community Association (SGCA) was founded and incorporated as a not-for-profit voluntary association in 1956. Community assets include a beautiful property on the circle at Tuttle Avenue and Siesta Drive.  The five acre property is on the shore of Phillippi Creek and includes a historic Victor Lundy Community Center and swimming pool.  The Community Center uses include: South Gate Community Sponsored Events and a public rental venue for: Weddings and Receptions, Anniversary Parties, Celebrations, Meetings and Worship Services.  The pool is open during Spring through Fall and available to South Gate Community Association members at a nominal seasonal fee.

All monies raised by the South Gate Community Association go back into the community "to beautify said South Gate, and for the purpose of promoting social and recreational gatherings for its members, their families and friends, and toward the end of cementing a good fellowship and a social cooperative spirit in this community."

The above quote from our 1956 community charter drives our mission at the South Gate Community Association and the allocation of funds raised.  The funds raised through the voluntary memberships, pool memberships and event rentals go to maintain the assets (building, property and pool) maintaining community value (deed restriction enforcement and community beautification) and social activities.
